Pest control on Youngstown's North Side is mostly about older buildings. Around Wick Park, about 70 percent of housing units were built before 1940, compared with about 40 percent citywide, according to the neighborhood's action plan. Older foundations, settled framing and many past repairs leave more small gaps for mice, insects and moisture.
The same plan found that most units near the park are rentals, and the housing mix includes multi-family buildings next to single-family homes. When pests show up in a shared house, the fix usually involves the whole building, not just 1 apartment.

Boundaries. The city's 2010 Citywide Plan places the North Side between the Mahoning River on the west, the City of Girard and Liberty Township on the north, Crab Creek on the east and the Madison Avenue Expressway on the south. It lists Brier Hill, Wick Park and North Heights as its neighborhoods.
Wick Park. The park was a gift to the city from the Wick family and was laid out as open space with horse trails. Its neighborhood runs from Fifth Avenue east to Logan and Randall Avenues, and from Madison Avenue north to North Heights and Bissell Avenues, right above the Youngstown State University campus.
How it grew. Wealthy families began building near the park in the 1890s. Worker housing then filled the blocks between Elm and Wick Avenues and the hillsides above Andrews Avenue.
Other parks. City park listings put Crandall Park at 400 Redondo Road and the North Side Pool at 620 Tod Lane. Yards that back onto parks and wooded edges tend to see more ticks, wasps and wildlife pressure than blocks without green space.
The CDC notes a mouse can fit through a hole about 1/4 inch wide, the width of a pencil. Older houses have many openings that size.

A licensed applicator uses the method that fits the pest, such as baits, traps or targeted products, always following the label.
We seal entry points we can reach and list repairs that need a contractor, like rotted sills or broken basement windows.
Follow-up visits confirm activity is dropping. Keep kids and pets away from treated areas for as long as the technician directs.

Mice look for warm shelter as nights cool, and older homes often have many small openings. The CDC notes a mouse can squeeze through a hole about 1/4 inch wide. Common spots are the foundation, porch joints, basement windows and gaps around pipes and wires.
That depends on the lease and Ohio landlord and tenant law, so check your lease first and report problems to the landlord in writing. Near Wick Park most units are rentals, so we often work with owners and tenants together. We can inspect every unit so 1 treatment does not just push pests next door.
Yards next to parks and wooded edges can see more ticks, wasps and wildlife than blocks without green space. That does not mean a problem is certain. Keeping grass short at the park edge, clearing brush piles and sealing gaps lowers the risk.
Many lenders and buyers ask for a wood-destroying insect inspection, and it makes sense on older homes with basements and porches. Eastern subterranean termites are the most common termite in Ohio, and OSU Extension notes they swarm in spring and early summer. We check the foundation, sills, porch and basement for mud tubes and damage.
The Wick Park plan counted a high vacancy rate in 2010, so this is a real question here. A vacant house does not always mean pests, but it can give mice and wildlife shelter close by. Sealing your own foundation, porch and utility gaps is the best defense.
Older house, duplex or rental, we will find how pests are getting in and make a plan to stop them.
