Quick answer

West Side pest control in Youngstown depends on which part of the West Side you live in. The Garden District and the older blocks of the Upper West Side are mostly pre-war homes, while much of Rocky Ridge was built in the 1950s. Many streets back onto Mill Creek Park. We match the inspection to the house and the yard, then treat and seal only where it is needed.

Most West Side calls are about mice in fall, ants and wasps in summer, and termite checks when a home is sold. Call (888) 752-0103 and tell us your street, the age of the house if you know it, and what you have seen.

Our process

Steps in a West Side pest visit

  1. Yard and outside walls

We walk the lot line, especially any edge that meets the park, then the foundation, sill, vents and garage.

  2. Inside the house

Basement, kitchen, baths and attic. In pre-war homes we pay extra attention to the sill and old pipe openings.

  3. Targeted treatment

A licensed applicator treats only where the pest is, following the label. Kids and pets stay away from treated areas as directed.

  4. Seal and recheck

We close the gaps we found and return to check traps and monitors until activity stops.

Homeowner tips

Do and don't for keeping pests out of a West Side home

Do

  • Seal small holes with steel wool and caulk before fall, as the CDC suggests
  • Keep firewood and leaf piles away from the house, especially at a park edge
  • Empty saucers, buckets and clogged gutters where mosquitoes breed
  • Fix leaks and damp wood that draw carpenter ants
  • Store pet food and birdseed in sealed bins

Don't

  • Rely on bug bombs or foggers, which rarely reach pests hiding in walls
  • Plug a hole while wasps are still using it
  • Try to remove a large wasp or hornet nest yourself
  • Put loose rodent bait where kids or pets can reach it
  • Ignore mud tubes on the foundation

FAQ

West Side homeowners ask us

My yard backs onto Mill Creek Park. What pests should I expect?

Wooded edges suit ticks, mosquitoes, wasps and wildlife, so park-side yards can see more of them than other blocks. That is not a sure thing. Keeping a mowed strip along the edge, clearing brush and leaf litter and removing standing water all help.

Are pre-war Garden District homes harder to keep mice out of?

Usually they need more sealing work. More than half of Garden District homes were built before 1940, and decades of settling open gaps at the sill, foundation and old pipe holes. The CDC notes a mouse can fit through about 1/4 inch, so we check those spots closely.

Do 1950s Rocky Ridge homes have different pest issues?

The pests are mostly the same, but the weak spots shift. Cape Cod and ranch homes often have garage door seals, dryer vents, knee walls and crawl or slab edges to check, rather than old stone foundations. The inspection is adjusted to the house.

When do West Side homes see termite swarmers?

OSU Extension notes that eastern subterranean termites swarm in Ohio in spring and early summer. Swarmers or piles of shed wings near a window or basement door are a reason to book a termite inspection. Mud tubes on the foundation are another sign.

Is pest treatment safe with kids and pets at home?

Our treatments are applied by Ohio-licensed applicators following the product label. The technician will tell you which areas to keep kids and pets away from, and for how long. Tell us about pets, fish tanks or allergies before the visit.
